5. VIRTUAL CINEMA LAB | EGO CURE
From 2015 to 2017, I was part of Aalto University’s Virtual Cinema Lab, an experimental space for research and production of immersive cinema and interactive experiences. During my residency, I worked on the pioneering immersive film EGO CURE, directed by Synes Elischka. The project was a groundbreaking blend of immersive filmmaking and real-time engines, central to the study of enactive and interactive cinema.
In EGO CURE, I focused on the virtual aspect, where the protagonist enters a digital version of the film. Before this transition, there’s an enactive scene where the character interacts with the viewer in a groundbreaking way, marking the first enactive interaction between a film character and an audience in VR, based on Enactive Avatar research by Pia Tikka.
The plot follows Emma, a choreographer who decides to rewrite her performance a day before its premiere, facing resistance from the curator. At a pivotal moment, Emma must wear the Ego Cure mask, propelling the viewer into a world that breaks the fourth wall and explores the narrative possibilities of Virtual Reality storytelling.
